âHow far?â
âA long way. Too far for us to make it under cover of darkness.â The Hunter stood looking down at the woman, his warriorâs instinct warring with his emotions. He knew that there were others ahead of him at the waiting place, but it was another dayâs journey from where they were now. Perhaps a bit more.
If he were to travel by himselfâhe shrugged, knowing it was a useless thought. He couldnât leave the woman by herself; even with the wolf and Mukwa to protect her, it would go against all he had been taught. Beside him the wolf growled, the sound low and throaty and The Hunter paused, his thoughts centered in that other place. Black eyes widened as he stepped back in surprise, Chera was peering up at him, her expression questioning as Leah reached down, her hand caressing the silver-white fur.
The Hunter watched as the wolf turned her head, her strange silver eyes with their swirling golden depths looking through him, to another place that even he could not see.
The shiver that rolled slowly up his spine spread out to the tips of his fingers as he drew Leah to him, his one thought to protect her from whatever was out thereâunknownâunseen. Then the night with its dark mystery surged with primitive power as the translucent mist roiled upward from the ground enveloping the warrior and the woman within its damp embrace.
Chera turned awayâaway from the warrior who held her young charge tightly to him. Too tightly. She snorted derisively while at the same time she suppressed the urge to growl. Instead, she focused on the night and what was riding upon the wind toward them. Chera stood at the edge of the forest, poised, ready for battle if need be, her senses so acute that she felt the shift in the wind before the Mukwa did.
Something, someone, was approaching. The Old One rose up slowly, scenting the night wind and that which was carried upon it. Massive shoulders bunched as he went down on all fours, his body taut as he swept the earth back and forth in front of him, his nails digging into the hard ground, the soft huff-huff as he blew the air forcefully out through his nose carrying to the warrior and the woman who stood a short distance away.
They too sensed the change in the night and even though The Hunter gripped the handle of his obsidian knife tightly, the Old One knew it would be useless against what was coming.
